Hydrocarbon resin

Hydrocarbon resin

Hydrocarbon resins are synthetic polymers used predominantly as tackifiers in the industry. There are many ways of producing hydrocarbon resins with different softening points and chemical compositions. They can also be hydrogenated to enhance their color and thermal stability.

TER Chemicals offers a wide range of high-quality hydrocarbon resins with exceptional properties that are suitable for many different applications.

Available in both aromatic and aliphatic forms, hydrocarbon resins are created by the polymerization of hydrocarbons (with the exception of olefins).

Today, these reactions generally take place using aluminum chloride or sulfuric acid as a catalyst.

Aromatic hydrocarbon resins (C9 resins) are thermoplastic polymers that are derived from either petroleum or carbon feedstock. C9 resins are synthesized using various aromatic C9 polymers. Depending on the polymers involved, the resins can take on different adhesive and hardness properties.

The resulting synthetic resins have exceptional properties, such as good compatibility with EVA, high resistance to light and solubility in a wide variety of substances.

There is a wide variety of hydrocarbon resins, each synthesized to have different softening points and chemical properties. The resins can also vary in terms of their transparency, molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and viscosity.

In general, hydrocarbon resins can be divided into three categories. C5 resins are aliphatic hydrocarbon resins that are supplied as yellowy granules. In contrast, C9 resins are aromatic hydrocarbon resins that are sold as brown granules and typically have higher melt viscosity than C5 hydrocarbon resins. The third type of hydrocarbon resin is known as Hikotack P-90, which is supplied as dark yellow pastilles. The product is a thermoplastic tackifier resin derived by polymerizing unsaturated aromatic olefins.

Industries

Hydrocarbon resins are highly versatile products capable of performing crucial functions in many applications - such as in the production of adhesives, rubber, coatings and inks.

Because they are good tackifiers, the resins are especially critical to the manufacture of adhesives. Adhesives are growing in importance because, besides bolting, welding and riveting, gluing has become another common method of joining materials in both domestic and industrial applications.

As additives in coatings, hydrocarbon resins play an important role in protecting the surfaces of all kinds of materials.

The rubber industry mainly uses hydrocarbon resins to optimize the rolling resistance and traction of tires.

Other applications of hydrocarbon resins include the modification of paper, paints, plastic and bitumen. Additionally, they are used in plant construction.
